The hidden beaches of Zanzibar

The light at 5:30 a.m. on the Serengeti is unlike any other. It arrives in horizontal bars, flooding the savannah floor while the acacia canopy remains charcoal. The lions are already up — they've been moving since 3 a.m., and our guide Joseph clocked them on the radio before we left camp.

This story belongs to Tanzania in the way that all good travel writing belongs to its landscape rather than its narrator. The names of places here carry weight: Ndutu, Mara, Ngorongoro. They are not metaphors. They are places where extraordinary things happen on ordinary mornings.

What makes a first safari impossible to replicate is the specific accumulation of unrepeatable detail: the angle of light, the smell of rain on red earth, the moment when the radio crackles and Joseph says quietly, "Turn around. Slowly." And there — thirty metres behind you — a leopard carries her kill into the sausage tree.

We will return. We always return. That is the one thing every client tells us after their first trip: not that it was beautiful (though it was), but that it was theirs. That is what we are in the business of building.
