Preparation

Kilimanjaro Packing List

The key to staying warm and comfortable on Kilimanjaro is layering. Do not overpack—porters are strictly limited to carrying 15kg (33 lbs) of your personal gear in your duffel bag.

Upper Body Layers

  • Moisture-wicking base layers (2-3)
  • Fleece jacket or mid-layer
  • Insulated down jacket (essential)
  • Waterproof & windproof hard shell

Lower Body

  • Thermal base layer bottoms
  • Trekking pants (2 pairs)
  • Waterproof over-pants
  • Fleece pants (for camp)

Footwear

  • Waterproof trekking boots (broken in)
  • Camp shoes (sneakers or sandals)
  • Heavy trekking socks (4-5 pairs)
  • Sock liners (optional)

Accessories

  • Warm beanie or fleece hat
  • Sun hat with brim
  • Heavy insulated gloves/mittens
  • Lightweight liner gloves
  • UV protection sunglasses

Equipment

  • 4-season sleeping bag (-15°C rating)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended)
  • 3-liter water hydration bladder
  • 30-40L daypack
